The Israeli Opera and Municipality of Tel Aviv will host a concert performance with more than 200 choristers and 100 orchestra members of the La Scala Opera House, and four of the opera’s leading soloists: Italian soprano Adriana Damato, Mezzo Soprano Luciana D'Intino, Tenor Giuseppe Fillianoti and German Bass Rene Pape. Together, they will perform Verdi’s Requiem, conducted by Daniel Barenboim, who is currently the lead conductor of the La Scala Opera House in Milan.

The concert will be held on a huge stage whose design will be similar to the prestigious La Scala Opera House in Milan, Italy. At the end of the performance, the sky will be lit up with splendid fireworks.

Milan’s La Scala Opera House is one of the most important and renowned opera houses in the world. This is an opera house with hundreds of years of history and tradition, on whose stage historical premiers were performed of operas by the greatest Italian composers, such as Verdi, Puccini and many others.

The Requiem, Verdi’s monumental creation, is without a doubt one of the composer’s most important creations, and is a miniature style opera. Verdi composed the Requiem during a self-imposed respite he took between the composition of Aida and Othello in 1887. Verdi himself conducted the premier performance of the Requiem at the Church of St. Marco in Milan on the 21st of May 1874. The renowned Verdi scholar Julian Budden claims that “if asked which of Verdi’s creations is the greatest, it would be very difficult to answer. But as to which creation demonstrates his genius in the most concentrated manner, there is no doubt that the answer it the Requiem. Here, Verdi’s musical thought could develop freely without any restriction of operatic tradition.” Together with Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Verdi’s Requiem is the pinnacle of 19th century ecclesiastical music. Composer Johannes Brahms stated unequivocally that: “Only a genius can write such a creation”.
