After a very successful premiere in 2012, the kosher wine festival in Jerusalem is an event that the orthodox, traditional, secular communities and frankly any wine aficionado in Jerusalem looks forward to.
This year’s Wine Jerusalem will take place on the 11th and 12th of February at Binyanei Ha’Uma, not far from the entrance to the city. The event features some forty wineries of various sizes and styles, each winery serving four selected vinos. Exhibiting wineries include: Golan Heights, Shiloh, Livni, Carmel, Yatir, Adir, Barkan, Montefiore, Tanya, Tavor, Yaffo, Segal, Galil Mountain, 1848, Domaine Ventura, Recanati, Morad, Lavie, Abouhav, Herzberg, Rimon, Gvaot and others.
Tickets are selling for NIS 90 and include a complimentary wine glass, sparkling water, unlimited wine tasting and parking at the adjacent parking lot.
Organizer A. Pupe which is situated in the rather orthodox Sanhedria neighborhood, is among the top kosher wine stores in the country and after undergoing massive renovations in recent years, the shop has been a growing draw for those searching for premium wine and other alcoholic beverages (all kosher of course). From my personal experience, the orthodox and ultra-orthodox communities have been showing an increasing interest in quality kosher wines. Wine is not viewed only as a beverage used for sacramental purposes but many see a good bottle of wine as an integral part of every holiday or Shabbat meal.
Another kosher wine store that is doing an excellent job is Kos Shel Bracha in the Katamon neighborhood - a rather intimate shop with a good selection of wines. If you are in the area, stop by as the owner usually has a bottle open for tasting and is always happy to share his experience and knowledge.
Back to the event, aside from the wines, visitors will also have an opportunity to participate in various seminars and guided wine tastings. Check out the dessert wine session where you can learn about the different grape varieties, wine regions and techniques for producing these sweet vinos.
Another interesting session is coined “from the vineyard to the bottle” and here one can learn about the value chain and process in wine production, from the planting of a new vineyard, through harvest, wine production, aging and bottling.
