This is the second Malbec based wine from the Golan Heights Winery and one of the few varietal Malbecs in Israel
From a winery that is often considered as the main catalyst behind the quality revolution and rejuvenation of the Israeli wine industry, head winemaker Victor Schonfeld and his team manage to produce excellent wines across all price & style categories. Over the past couple of years, the winery has also introduced several new vinos to its portfolio, including a sparkling rose, new varietal red wines and I am sure that the Golan Heights Winery still has a few surprises in its pipeline.
This is the second Malbec based wine from the Golan Heights Winery and one of the few varietal Malbecs in Israel. The winery produced a rather limited quantity of 16 barrels or some 4,000 bottles. Originally a French grape variety that is showing excellent results in Argentina, Malbec is considered by many as the national Argentinean grape variety and accounts for many of the big and famous reds of Mendoza.
Golan Heights, Yarden, Malbec, 2011 – Still a bit firm so allow some time to aerate or cellar for another year or so. A full bodied wine with notes of black berry fruits, pepper, ripe plums, sweet spices, herbs – all leading to a long finish.
While there is no doubt that this is a very enjoyable vino, a NIS 130 price tag (at par with the excellent Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon), seems a bit high and perhaps as the winery produces larger quantities of the Malbec this will be adjusted.
Gamla & Tel Aviv's Ozen Bar
The Golan Heights Winery is sponsoring a series of musical performances at the Ozen Bar in Tel Aviv, and wines from the Gamla label will be offered at attractive prices with discounted refills. The next performance will take place on 31 July and feature musician Raz Shmueli who some of you may have seen on the popular talent show – The Voice. Shmueli will be singing some of her original materials in addition to cover songs from popular artists.
