“There are also some people like me, who are running in on their way to work and can’t resist stopping to equip themselves with hot cheese rich bourekas or a sweet pastry to start their day with a smile…” Margalit Eshkol enjoyed some of life’s pleasures at Mercaz Haugot in Rishon Letzion.
One of life’s small pleasures is what happens when one passes by a bakery in the early hours of the morning. One of life’s great pleasures is what happens when one devotes oneself to this hot sweet smell and chases it inside. I had the opportunity to experience this sort of pleasure a few days ago at a place that’s full of surprises, while on an unplanned morning wander on Rothschild St. in Rishon Letzion. Somehow on this noisy commercial street a darling and inviting corner revealed itself – especially inviting to lovers of sweet carbohydrates like myself.
Mercaz Haugot (The Cake Centre) at 63 Rothschild is a family bakery, a small homey patisserie with a personal and intimate touch on one hand, but which is completely open and welcoming on the other.
Regular customers take their time, sit comfortably and start off their day slowly with an excellent Landwer coffee and assortment of fresh cookies. There are jam cookies, crisp donkey’s ears and even lovely fresh butter croissants.
There are also some people like me, who have randomly come across the place or those who are running in on their way to work and can’t resist stopping for just a minute to equip themselves with hot cheese rich bourekas or a sweet pastry to start their day with a smile.
There is also a quality cream cake selection that doesn’t just look pretty. These cakes are perfect for an indulgent birthday – especially for chocolate lovers. We celebrated with a golden crumbed cheesecake – refreshing, delicate and very tasty alongside a cup of quality coffee. Others we met preferred the take-away option and took home cream puffs or sabrinas, quiches or blintzes filled with cheese and raisins (which I couldn’t stop eating) and, of course, like all self-respecting bakeries, a large selection of sugar free cakes is also available.
This location, which opened in the 80’s, is the first Rishon Letzion location. There are other locations in Rishon and Kfar Saba.
If you are looking to sweeten up an event or celebration, or just feel like hosting something without too much bother, you will find what you sought in round cakes in 2 sizes and simpler, no less tasty rectangular cakes. And all this at very reasonable prices…
