“85% McLaren Vale Shiraz and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, full bodied and dark impenetrable garnet in colour, generous black and a little red fruits, plums, sweet cherries, coffee, and chocolate along with hints of pepper and spices…” Yonatan Sternberg meditates on the ‘global village’ while sampling wines from Fusion Global Winery.
Over the past few years there have many discussions advocating both for and against the changes brought to us by the process of globalization. While this trend offers a plethora of new opportunities – turning the world into a “global village”, every major change requires time, and inevitably, takes its toll.
The Fusion Global Winery is the story of four wine enthusiasts who decided to seize this opportunity, and translate the “global village” into a “global winery” – disregarding physical borders and offering wines from various wine regions around the world.
The process:
Winemaker Doron Yitzchaki (who also serves as the head winemaker at the Tulip Winery) and partners choose a wine region from which they would like to produce wine, they then study the region, generating a list of the top local wineries with which Fusion Global Winery wishes to cooperate. Doron visits these wineries and, after sampling the wines, purchases the best barrels he can get his hands on. He then continues to age the wine and creates the final blend.
Sounds complicated, right? Gabi Israel, co-founder and partner at the Fusion Global Winery, explains that “while there are obviously many challenges, the winery offers its customers a variety of high quality and unique wines without borders, produced in some of the worlds top wine regions.” To date, Doron produced wines both in Australia as well as in Spain. Fusion Global Winery is constantly reviewing new opportunities and locations while “maintaining the high standards we initially set”.
Tasting Notes:
Fusion, Tempranillo-Garnacha, Carinena, Spain, 2005 (NIS 140)
Blended with 15% Granacha, and aged for 24 months in oaks barrels, this medium-full bodied red offers generous dark berry fruits, cherries, oak and flowers all leading to a long and well balanced finish.
Fusion, Shiraz-Merlot, Australia, 2005 (NIS 130)
A blend of 75% McLaren Vale (an Australian wine region) Shiraz and 25% Merlot, dark purple towards garnet in colour, full bodied and noticeable alcohol – the wine is showing sweet-jammy aromas and flavours, black cherries, dark plums, oak and violets along with hints of various green herbs.
Fusion, Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia, 2005 (NIS 130)
This time 85% McLaren Vale Shiraz and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, full bodied and dark impenetrable garnet in colour, generous black and a little red fruits, plums, sweet cherries, coffee, and chocolate along with hints of pepper and spices. Similar to the other wines, this red is both unfiltered and unrefined – hoping to preserve the true characteristics of the grape varieties and the wine.
Fusion wines will be available in the leading wine stores and in the top restaurants both in Israel and throughout North America.
